Metal Roof

Metal roofing refers to a variety of roofing systems made from metal pieces or tiles. Metal roofs are made of steel or aluminum. They have become more popular due to their durability and for the fact that they are fireproof. They may seem expensive but they may be cost-effective in the long run, due to their long life.

Types of Metal Roofing:

Standing Seam: Vertical panels with concealed fasteners.

Metal Shingles and Shakes: Designed to look like slate, tile, or wood.

Stone-Coated Steel: Metal shingles coated with stone chips.

Advantages of Metal Roofing:

  • Long lifespan: Typically last 40-80 years, maybe longer depending on maintenance and material.
  • Durability: Resistant to wind, hail, fire and impact (especially the standing seam).
  • Low Maintenance: Minimal upkeep if installed correctly
  • Energy Efficient: Reflects solar radiant heat, reducing cooling cost.
  • Lightweight: Easier to install
  • Style Variety: wide range of colors, textures, and appearances.

Drawbacks:

  • Higher upfront cost
  • Noise: can be loud during rain or hail unless properly insulated.
  • Denting: softer metals can dent from hail or branches
  • Expansion/Contraction: Improper installation can lead to loosening over time.

Maintenance:

  • Inspect annually for loose screws, rust spots, or panel movement
  • Clean debris and leaves to avoid water pooling.
  • Touch up coatings if scratches or fading occurs
  • Seal penetrations (vents, chimneys) properly to prevent leaks.
